Looking for vintage Pomellato jewelry? Learn about the history, materials used, jewelry marks, and collectible pieces in this guide.

Since Pomellato began operations in 1967, only some of its jewelry is considered vintage. Vintage jewelry encompasses jewelry at least 20 years old, so anything made by Pomellato from 1967 to 2003 would be regarded as vintage.

Pomalleto is a jewelry brand emphasizing soft, rounded forms that wear comfortably against a woman's skin. Read-to-wear collections utilizing colorful gems are meant to be worn and changed often. As fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez once declared, "Pomellato is the blue jeans of high-end jewelry."

Pomellato Jewelry History

Pomellato is an Italian jewelry company. The name comes from "cavallino pomellato," meaning a pinto or piebald pony.

The company was founded in 1948 by the Rabolini family. Still, it did not become a genuine brand until 1967, when Pino Rabolini met Luigi Signori. They transformed the brand from crafts jewelry to global fame by developing pendants and necklaces in gold with diamonds. As a result, Pomellato currently ranks among the top five European jewelry companies in sales.

Pino Rabolini was born into a family business of goldsmithing, and Pomellato prides itself on being a keeper of strong Milanese goldsmithing traditions. Collections are handmade at the atelier in Milan headquarters by over 100 goldsmiths.

Pomellato was one of the pioneers in the prêt-à-porter (ready-to-wear) approach to high-end jewelry. Like ready-to-wear fashion, jewelry designed with this method is fit for everyday wear, no matter the occasion.

Rabolini helped revolutionize the world of fine jewelry by encouraging women to wear colorful gems. The first few pieces he designed were an homage to the women frequenting a popular Milanese bar called Bar Jamacia. He was inspired to make pieces for women deserving of fine jewelry that reflect their dynamic personalities, even if they were merely headed to a local bar or cafe.

In 1982, Pomellato opened a boutique in Via San Pietro all'Orto, Milan, and from the mid-1980s, the company opened stores worldwide. Silver jewelry was introduced in 1983, and watches in 1989. And in 1990, gemstones came to the stage, including diamonds, but specifically large colored stones with cabochon-cut, to create highly evocative jewelry pieces.

In 1994, Pomellato declared its "commitment to the protection of the natural heritage," it created DoDo, a range of modular jewelry that could tell a story and communicate messages of universal meaning.

Pomellato uses colorful gemstones such as tourmaline, aquamarine, ijolite, topaz, amethyst, garnet, and peridot. These colorful gems, a unique design, and innovative stone cutting and setting techniques define the iconic style of the Pomellato brand.

In 2013, Pomellato was acquired by the Kering Group.

Pomellato's Commitment to the Environment and Sustainability

  • Invests in the traceability of their colored stones and diamonds.
  • Explores new materials and recycling solutions.
  • Collaborates with a Milan-based goldsmith school to keep the trade alive and thriving.
  • They are firmly committed to improving the social conditions and lives of women.
  • Pomellato is carbon neutral.

Pomellato Jewelry Collections

Some of Pomellatos most notable collections include:

DoDo - DoDo is a brand created by Pomellato. DoDo focuses on playful shapes aimed at a trendsetting, youthful audience. It is known for animal-themed pendants combined with beads and straps in silver, yellow gold, and rose gold. Utilizing quality craftsmanship, precious materials, and contemporary design, DoDo emphasizes free expression through modular and customizable pieces.

Nudo - This collection put the brand on the international map. Nudo is Italian for "nude," a fitting description of the Nudo ring with its simple, prong-free setting. The Nudo ring's solitaire stone has a double-face cut and is completely exposed on all sides except the bottom. The band, usually rose gold, often lacks any stones or designs.

Sabbia - Meaning "sand," this collection pairs rose gold with pavé white, black, and brown diamonds blended together in an irregular sequence of shimmer.

Capri - Capri is inspired by the vibrant, saturated blues of the sea, using fine turquoise, along with other opaque gems in colors of the Mediterranean palette, including coral, lavender jade, lapis lazuli, and chrysoprase.

Arabesque - This collection showcases the goldsmithing talent behind the brand. Elaborate swirling arabesque or floral patterns are carved out of bold gold pieces. Unique matte or polished finishes offer different textures. Brown and white diamonds, and sometimes amber, rock crystal and smoky quartz are added to the mix.

Tango - Mixes rose gold and brown diamonds with the edgy look of burnished silver. Unusual gems such as prasiolite and amethyst are used.

Pom Pom - The company's haute couture collection. Pieces are often designed around one extraordinary gemstone. Pom Pom was launched in 2007 to celebrate Pomellato's 40th anniversary, and pieces are sold exclusively by appointment at select locations worldwide.

M'Ama Non M'Ama - Meaning -" he loves me, he loves me not" - this collection showcases simple feminine pieces that can be stacked, mixed, and matched.

Iconica - Launched to celebrate the brand's 50th anniversary, this new range offers a selection of all-gold designs with enhanced white or brown diamond pave crystals and sophisticated jewels.

Fantina - Italian for female jockey, Fantina observes the spirit of liberated women who make their own destinies. Elegant simplicity, bold contemporary lines, and abstract forms infuse this jewelry line.

Victoria - Named after Queen Victoria, this range is inspired by Victorian times' black mourning jewels and intricate lace patterns. The collection is designed with a monochrome color palette featuring only black, white, and rose gold materials. Openwork techniques and unusual materials such as jet, agate, pyrite, and rock crystal have been worked into earrings, pendants, and rings.

La Goia - Pomellato's first-ever high jewelry collection is characterized by its irregular and colorful stones, distinct aesthetics, and bright materials.

Catene - One of Pomellato's signature designs that directly links back to the house's rich heritage of chain making. The rings are available in rose gold and rose gold set with white diamonds or white gold set with white diamonds.
